A great starting place: Byline Magazine (click) not only contains lots of advice for writers, but also sponsors writing contests in all genres for adults, plus monthly contests for student writers in grades one through twelve during the school year.
The Children's Writing Supersite, sponsored by Children's Book Insider, provides excellent information about the market, and also features a mile-high chat room. (That's the way they talk in Colorado.)
Cynthia Leitich Smith's (click) home page is a plethora of information for writers and readers. Her site includes interviews with writers of every genre of literature for young readers.
The Purple Crayon (click) is filled with up-to-the-minute market information for writers. The site is hosted by children's book editor, Harold Underdown. He is also the author of The Idiot's Guide to Publishing Children's Books.
Smartwriters (click) With a logo like "Dream it. Do it. Write it now!" you
know you're going to get the hottest news and tips about the market for
young readers. Enter one of their writing competitions. Contests are how many writers get their start.
Great Websites for Kids (click) is sponsored by the American Library Association's Library Service to Children.
Achuka (click) is an independent children's book site hosted by English writer and critic, Michael Thorn. The site features author interviews, and both UK and USA publishing news.
